Victoria Santos - Networks of Support
Nowadays the networks of support available to Filipinos wishing to immigrate to Canada are more available than when my mother decided to move to Canada. Vast amounts of immigration resources can be found on the internet. In addition, the government offers workshops and information sessions for potential immigrants. A big factor is just the amounts of Filipino people there are already in Canada and the knowledge they have when sharing their experience to friends and family who will potentially make the move to Canada. Around 400,000 Filipino-Canadians call this country home and can help friends and family in their journey over.
My parents weren’t as fortunate to have these networks of support in their move. The internet wasn’t yet a source for information as it is now and the number of Filipinos in Canada was only starting to grow.
My mother feels as if my dad and she took on the process on their own and they just had to endure and cope with the hurdles they faced. They were unaware of the information available to them at that time.
